Petaluma's location in the Petaluma Gap, the natural wind corridor between the coast and the inland valleys, means it runs cooler and windier than Santa Rosa or Healdsburg, particularly in the afternoons. Fenetex motorized wind screens are a common addition to Petaluma projects, cutting the afternoon breeze without blocking the views of the surrounding hills and farmland. The trade-off is a longer comfortable outdoor season: Petaluma's moderated temperatures mean the shoulder months of April, May, September, and October are prime outdoor living time.
